Wednesday Races: Go on Red alert…

The racing world continues to draw breath in advance of this weekend’s Epsom battles, and a Wednesday card offers little above the distinctly average.  That said, there’ll be winners at Nottingham just as there will be at Epsom.

We will turn to the Midlands track for our selection of the day.  The sprint handicap (1450 BST) has a firm favourite in Wahiba.  He successfully stepped down to 7f last time and made all for an easy win at Yarmouth.  He isn’t really bred to sprint, and this step down to 6f will further test that early speed, and even though this is a small field, he may find it harder to dominate.

We prefer the course winning form of Socialites Red.  He was a surprise winner here last month, but ultimately beat his field in style.  Placed runs at Beverley and Chester were respectable enough given he was not especially favoured by the draw.

Back on the straight course here, and clearly in fine form having run so well as recently as Saturday, his proven course form can upset the more fancied runners.  Apprentice Rowan Walsh takes off a useful 7lbs and is the horse’s regular partner.

Recommendation:  Socialites Red, (1450 Nottingham), 11/2 generally available
