Whilst all roads lead to the Cotswolds next week for top class racing fare, they pass through the West Country today for a heavy ground slog around Wincanton.
It may not be time yet for Cheltenham, but the similarly-named Cheltenam De Vaige may just help us further our war chest ahead of battle.
He contests the low grade 2m4f handicap hurdle that opens Wincanton’s card (1350 GMT). This is a weak race, but as the youngest runner he is entitled to have improvement that the older sloggers here have long since lost.
Cheltenam De Vaige made an encouraging first handicap experience at Towcester, when running on well from an unpromising position to finish clear in third. The second from that race has won since, and in the context of this field that’s gilt-edged form.
Provided he can maintain his position on this sharper track, he can rely on his younger legs to prove too strong up the home straight.
Recommendation: Cheltenam De Vaige, (1350 Wincanton), 4-1 generally available
