Cheltenham Countdown: Long Distance Thinking

In the build-up to the Festival we will be taking a look at some Festival-related special flutters.

Bet365 offers a market on which of the 28 races will be won by the widest margin.

Recent experience shows that race distance matters when the ground starts to ride soft, and amateur events such as the Kim Muir and the Foxhunters have recently offered up wide margin winners.

On better ground, the classy 2m and 2m4f championship events are the place to look.

With the ground looking reasonable and weather set fair, this looks a match between the Arkle (8/1) headed by Altior, and the Champion Chase (10/1) with the mighty Douvan.

Altior is first off the blocks. He clearly outclasses his field, however as a novice he may be ridden with due caution until the home bend – a wide margin victory still awaits.

Douvan could take a grip of his race from an earlier stage. With a brewing, but indirect, rivalry between him and Altior, it would be no surprise if Douvan’s jockey Ruby Walsh set out to put down a marker by eclipsing anything Altior achieves the previous day.

There could value in backing them both, but the Champion Chase at 10/1 could be an excellent way to cash in on the Douvan juggernaut.

Recommendation: Cheltenham Festival, Race Won By The Widest Margin – Champion Chase 10/1, Bet365
