Cheltenham: The Party’s Over

A deserted Cheltenham betting ring marks the end of the four day jamboree.

And what a Festival it was for the Irish, with their 19 wins in total crowned by the excellent victory for Sizing John in an exciting Gold Cup.

They added three more handicaps to make the score in that seven out of 10, which will re-open the debate on Irish vs UK ratings.

For Lap Of The Odds, the day started well with Defi Du Seuil’s comfortable Triumph win, but soon resorted to type as repeatedly we hit the bar, both metaphorically and actually.

It was an exciting festival that frankly lacked equine highlight, although the training achievements of Messrs Elliott and Mullins were astonishing once again.

We will remember it fondly for Presenting Percy, but possibly more for the agony of defeat being on the wrong side of all four photo finishes in which we had a selection, with Singlefarmpayment being one that it will take many moons to forget.

It’s 361 days til we can do it all again. But thankfully its only three weeks to Aintree and only one day until the Midlands National….
