Saturday Races: We Know What Four

Cheltenham may have come and gone, but the carnival rolls on to today’s Midland National card at Uttoxeter and the consolation card at Kempton for those missing the cut for Cheltenham races.

One of our Cheltenham picks was Harry Fry’s American. He swerved the RSA because of the going. It is that crucial bit softer at Uttoxeter, and you can be sure trainer Fry will not risk one of his best horses unless he considered it suitable. A big horse, he can carry the weight here and jump his rivals into submission.

The Tony Martin-trained Golden Spear has looked well handicapped all season and was set for a Cheltenham appearance but also missed the cut. He looks likely to be the market leader here in a race stronger of numbers than quality.

We were sweet on Romain de Senam for the Close Brothers handicap at Cheltenham. This Kempton test may be somewhat different, but he remains a very well handicapped horse on hurdles form, and it may be significant trainer Paul Nicholls chose this over other festival alternatives.

Gonalston Cloud is our idea of the Midlands National winner. This horse has been performing well of late whilst hinting that a test of stamina such as this would bring out extra improvement. He looks ready to step up at this level provided the ground is not too soft.

Golden Spear (14:40 Kempton), 5/1 generally available
