Navan Races: Our Sunday Best

Anyone who has been to Navan races will know that the horses may be better served by Sherpas than jockeys. The steep uphill finish, usually combined with testing going, makes for an extreme stamina test.

Today’s 1510 race brings together strands of Irish handicap hurdle form.

Lilshane won this last year and off just 7lbs higher must have a solid chance.  Grand Partner won well at the Christmas Leopardstown meeting and has run well again since. Both contenders will be ridden by 7lb claiming jockeys, each with a roughly 1/20 strike rate, and these challenging conditions will demand strong tactical awareness.

Sanibel Island has master tactician Davy Russell on board and runs for the in-form Gordon Elliott yard, but he has some work to do with Lilshane on the form book.

Concordin also won well at Leopardstown over Christmas, and although well held last time after being hampered, he still has a two from four handicap record and remains relatively unexposed. The experienced Philip Enright is in the saddle, and this previous course winner looks good value to prevail.

Recommendation: Concordin (15:10 Navan), 9/2 generally available
