The Formula One season starts Sunday, with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
The sport’s hierarchy have decided to shake things up a little by introducing new regulations, hopefully resulting in faster cars and more competition.
That said, Briton Lewis Hamilton is hot favourite to win his fourth drivers’ title and Mercedes a fourth consecutive championship. At evens, punters who fancy Hamilton would have to commit their money for almost a full year.
However, one way to play this is through the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award. Over the history of the award, Formula One has produced the most winners, with the one exception of athletics.
Another helpful factor is the absence of ready competition. The SPOTY betting list has boxer Anthony Joshua as favourite, but he will have a difficult fight against Wladimir Klitschko in April. And at 2/1 you’re not getting much of a price. Next in the betting is yachtsman Ben Ainslie, at 5/1. But he won’t find winning the America’s Cup that easy. And then comes Andy Murray…surely not again!
At 12/1, Hamilton offers healthy odds to add the SPOTY title he won in 2014.
Recommendation: Hamilton to win 2017 Sports Personality of the Year award at 12/1, Bet365
