Plumpton Races: It’s just a mare…

BREAKING NEWS:  Selection Goodnight Charlie is a non- runner. Please click here for today’s new best bet.

A typical Monday afternoon, and it’s bargain basement time at Market Rasen, Wolverhampton and Plumpton. Still, we’re bargain basement kind of guys…

The horse that catches our eye is the grey mare Goodnight Charlie, who contests the 3m handicap hurdle at Plumpton (1600 BST).

She comes late to racing, this being her first season, and looked to be finding her level two runs ago, before hitting the board with a gutsy win last time at Towcester.

That was a good effort as she jumped markedly left, which whilst not good at Towcester should be ideal here at Plumpton. Breeding and running style suggest this ground should suit, and a modest 5lb rise for that win is almost eliminated by jockey Bridget Andrews’ 3lb claim.

The favourite, Boher Lad, is in good form, but a 10lb hike for his win last time is pretty severe on a veteran 10-year-old hurdler who can’t have too much in hand.

The rest of the field look either too old and exposed, or out of form and needing a spark. Goodnight Charlie has current form, and she has scope to improve, and can light up an otherwise mundane Monday.

Recommendation:  Goodnight Charlie (1600 Plumpton), 5/1 generally available
