Doncaster sees the start of the turf flat season in the U.K.
We will have our usual morning post tomorrow, which will feature the big Lincoln handicap and the Spring Mile.
Unusually, we want to make an advance selection in light of what we think might be a significant gamble in the opening turf race – the listed Cammidge Trophy over 6 furlongs (1350 BST).
The horse in question is Blue Bayou, a 4-y-o filly trained by Brian Meehan and due to be ridden by Frankie Dettori.
As a 2-y-o this filly was good enough to be narrowly beaten in a Group 2 over 6f, before winning a Group 3 over 7f, and finishing off placing 5th behind Minding and Ballydoyle in a Group 1 in Ireland. That is a significantly higher level to this.
Her 3-y-o campaign was brief, failing to stay the mile in both the 1000 Guineas and again at Royal Ascot.
She could easily have been packed off to the paddocks with her track record, but it looks significant that she has been kept on, and now runs here at a grade somewhat below the level she had been targeted at previously. A return to 6f should suit on both track evidence and breeding.
The final sign is money. Early 25/1 had already disappeared, and as this post goes out, 20/1 remains available, but we suspect this horse could be single digits by the morning – hence the early notice post.
Recommendation: Blue Bayou (1350 Doncaster), 20/1 available
