More high class action from Aintree kicks off with something of an internal crisis for the Lap Of The Odds team.
Our good friend Phil has been aiming his horse Bigmartre at today’s opener (1340 BST), and he arrives in great shape. He is handicapped well and ran a personal best at the meeting last year and should run another blinder.
That being said, we felt Hawk High would run well at Cheltenham, he didn’t. It was a stronger race than this and to our eyes the horse looked bursting with good health only for that to manifest itself in too prominent a position over that testing trip and he just ran out of gas. He’s 2 from 3 at this course, and given a little more early constraint, looks a big price. He gets a narrow vote over Bigmartre and Sky Khan.
The second race looks tricky, and the third race is at the mercy of Might Bite it he wants it. The Melling Chase (1525) however has an attractive look. Traffic Fluide impressed running on from the back in the Champion Chase and could be overpriced, but this race fits Gods Own like a glove. He had jumping issues at Cheltenham, but back at his favourite track he can come out on top again.
The Topham Chase (1605) over the big fences offer an opportunity to look at 3 horses who impressed in Cheltenham defeat. We liked Bouvreil, and he could jump these fences well, that said he looks a little hard to win with and that’s a tough trick to pull off on this run-in. Go Conquer is rightly fancied to go well from the front and must go close, but the novice Gold Present impressed most in defeat last month, and this smooth travelling sort can come out on top.
The Sefton hurdle looks trappy, however the Bumper gives Western Ryder a chance to show that an unlucky run at the Festival was all that prevented him from being at least the best U.K. bumper horse this year. That said, this bumper’s rarely a betting prospect.
