Wednesday Races: Chasing simplicity

Sometimes it pays to just keep it simple.  For all that there may be some hidden gems in the opening stages of the flat season at Catterick or Nottingham today, we are instead going to trust the formbook in a long distance chase at Fontwell.

The horse in question is Itoldyou. Now an 11 year old he has plenty of form in the book, and although modest he is consistent and predictable, and nearly heads the weights in this contest (1540 BST), which says something about the quality of opposition.

He has won 3 of 6 course runs, and his 3 runs over course and distance have yielded 2 wins and a narrow 2nd. The good ground seems essential for him, and he looked all over the winner last time at Plumpton until being passed in the shadow of the post.

The opposition are a motley bunch. The 78 rated (very low) favourite, Thepartyisover, beat only one finisher last time over hurdles and is a 12 year old maiden over fences. The second favourite Bandon Bridge looks more of a danger, but it was a poor 4 runner race that he won last time on his chasing debut.

Itoldyou can put his experience to good use and his prominent style and reliable jumping can get them all in trouble around a tight circuit that so obviously suits.

Recommendation: Itoldyou, (1540 Fontwell), 13/2 Ladbrokes.
