Cricket IPL: Skipper to Shine…

The Indian Premier League has been bubbling along for a few weeks now, and it is already crisis time for one of the favourites.  The big budget Royal Challengers Bangalore have won just 1 of 5 matches and share bottom spot with today’s hosts, the Gujarat Lions.

Both teams have struggled in the bowling department having spent the bulk of their budgets on glamorous big-hitting batting line-ups.  Whilst that hasn’t worked to date, faced with each others bowlers, this could be a big runs encounter.

The Gujarat Lions bat a bit deeper with McCullum, Raina, Roy, Smith and Finch all capable of quick and big runs.

Bangalore have world stars in skipper Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers, three of the all-time greats in this discipline.  Gayle and AB are the blasters, whilst Kohli tends to try and bat through the innings.

Odds of 2/1 about Kohli topping the Bangalore batting look about right.  Bangalore are 4/5 to win the match, but we think that in an event where Kohli is top batsman (and hence hasn’t failed) then the odds of a Bangalore win would be more like 1/2, making a combined Kohli to top score and Bangalore to win bet around 7/2 (2/1 * 1/2).

Whilst there is no market for this we can back him at 6/1 to be man-of-the-match.

This looks a gift as the Indian captain is the absolute darling of spectators and pundits alike and is sure to lift the gong if he anchors a winning effort.

Recommendation:  Virat Kohli, Man of the Match, (Gujarat v Banglore, 1530 BST) 6/1, Betfred, ToteSport, Stan James.
