I know it’s Barcelona. I know they can call on the scoring exploits of Messi, Suarez and Neymar. I know they have won through in stickier situations. But surely not this time.
The Catalan giants return to the Nou Camp tonight needing another sporting miracle after losing to Juventus 3-0 last week.
Barca made Champions League history last round by becoming the first side to overturn a four goal deficit, beating Paris Saint Germain 6-1 to reach these quarterfinals.
However, while the gap is only (!) three goals this time, they face the Italian champions – a team well versed in the defensive dark arts.
Barcelona coach Luis Enrique says “another special evening” is on the cards, but it’s difficult to know if he truly believes this.
That said, one potential life line could be a red card for the visitors, and you can be sure the Barca players and the vociferous home fans know this.
At the same time, Italian defenders aren’t afraid of being cynical if the situation dictates.
Juventus are quoted at 7/2 to suffer a red card, and that appeals, while Barca are priced at 4/1. However, taking both of these odds together suggests something of a 6/4 shot for a red card (either side) in the game, yet Stan James is offering 5/2. We will be having some of this.
