Cheltenham: Shall we do the fandango?

Racing makes a welcome return to Cheltenham today with a competitive card and several interesting betting opportunities.

We like the look of Divine Spear (1515 BST) and Doing Fine (1550), and wouldn’t put anyone off backing them – however we have a stand out bet of the day who will be our solo selection.

A couple of weeks ago at Newbury we landed a nice touch on a horse called Beer Goggles.  In researching that race, rank outsider that day First Fandango (1625) was identified as a possible improver with the quickening ground.  Well he improved immensely, and a bold front running display nearly paid dividends, although thankfully he couldn’t cope with the well treated winner.

With Richard Johnson now in the saddle and quicker ground again likely to play further to his strengths, he can pull off the front running tactics, which often work well here when the ground rides on the fast side.

A 2lb rise for finishing 2nd last time looks a wee bit generous.  Although he hasn’t won now for 2 1/2 years, he is rated nearly 20lbs below that winning mark, and he could start a productive Summer campaign here.

Recommendation:  First Fandango (1625 Cheltenham) , 6/1 generally available.
