Cricket: Tye-breaks needed in Kolkatta

The IPL descends on Eden Garden Kolkatta this afternoon for a match between the highflying hosts, the Knight Riders, and the basement-dwelling Gujarat Lions. We were generously refunded stakes yesterday by Stan James after selection Kieron Pollard failed to make an appearance at the crease, so we will put that immediately back to work.

The last time these two met, the KKR chased down a target without the loss of a wicket, and another dominant display is likely this time.

Our first temptation was a look at the Kolkata top batsman, where a bookie discrepancy stands out as a result of the KKR’s use of a pinch-hitter. That has been Sunil Narine, and whilst he is a best priced 8/1 elsewhere, both Paddy Power and Betfair offer a huge 35/1, a price more appropriate to his usual lower order station.

That might be due to the arrival of beefy Kiwi Colin de Grandhomme, who took over the pinch hitting role last time. He is only 7/2 with PP and Betfair, but can be backed at 12/1 with BetVictor. That makes some appeal, but in both instances the presence of skipper and anchor-man Gauthan Gambhir limits the likelihood of collection.

A better way to profit may be in the Gujarat top bowler market. The Lions have been limited by a weak bowling squad, but their undoubted success story has been Aussie Andrew Tye whose variations of quick, medium pace and slower off-breaks have been particularly adept at the death of the innings.

He is good value to pick up some “cheap” wickets when the slog is on, and can be backed at 3/1 to be the Gujarat top bowler – which makes a lot of appeal given the limitations of his teammates.

Recommendation: Andrew Tye, Top Gujarat Bowler, 3/1 Betway.
