Pontefract once again dishes up its eclectic mix of maidens, opaque handicaps and insanely long distanced flat races. We love a Monday at Ponty, and today is no exception. It offers up a rare chance for punters to enjoy a sequel…
The race that catches our eye is the 1430 BST handicap over 1 mile. This has been priced up as an ultra-competitive race, but we think one of these is being oddly underestimated.
Rockwood won here just two weeks ago. That was a big surprise to punters (40/1), and presumably to the handicapper as he has effectively chosen to almost disregard the form, raising the winner just 2lbs for his efforts.
Rockwood will be the first runner from that race to reappear, as such the handicapper’s judgement is yet to be tested. To our eye, this horse travelled supremely well towards the rear that day before making a move around the wide outside to sweep through and win.
That looked like he had a lot more in hand than 2lbs. This may be a better race, but then it may not, and at 9/1 it appears the bookies have shown the form the same scant respect as the handicapper. Rocky can deliver the bookies a knockout blow.
Recommendation: Rockwood, (1430 Pontefract), 9/1 generally available.
