Monday Racing: Green Light at Beverley

The flat season is here, and with it the issues of draw bias.  This will feature strongly at the coming Chester meeting, but if there is a second prize for draw bias it has to go to Beverley. Nestled beneath the Yorkshire moors, the track is constantly on the right hand turn and significantly favours low draw in races up to a mile.

That makes today’s 7.5f handicap (1540) particularly interesting as form horses Make on Madam, Tafteesh and Fine Example will all have to overcome double-figure wide draws.

We are not sure any of them have enough in hand to overcome that handicap.  In contrast, veteran Green Howard has been in solid form of late and gets the plum draw in box 1.  He ran well last time when returning to turf at Leicester, and could be ready to peak.

As a hold up horse there is a risk of getting boxed in, and jockey Duran Fentiman will need to chart a cunning course, but he knows this course extremely well, and he can conserve vital energy whilst his main rivals run around in lane 8.

We will look to Rebecca Bastiman’s stalwart to land the goods and trigger a Mayday mayday for the bookies.

Recommendation:  Green Howard (1540 Beverley), 7/1 generally available
