Champions League: Real to Edge Derby

The Champions League kicks into top gear tonight, as the two main Madrid sides meet in the first leg of the semifinal in the Bernabeu Stadium.

This tie has history – Real beat their neighbours Atletico on penalties in last season’s final, and also won the 2014 version 4-1 after extra time.

Real do seem to have the wood over their city rivals of late, with Atletico’s charismatic manager Diego Simeone registering only one win in four games since French legend Zinedine Zidane took over as manager of Real in early 2016.

Atletico’s preparations have also been hit by injuries, with its famed defence having to make do without three key players.

While Real will also miss Welsh forward Gareth Bale, the signs do point to a home win tonight, although a tight game is also likely with both sides reluctant to throw caution to the wind at this stage.

We at Lap of the Odds are edging towards a 1-0 home win, at 6/1, but wouldn’t put punters off selecting no goalscorer.

Recommendation: Real to win 1-0 at 6/1, Paddy Power, William Hill
