If you have been to Brighton races you will know that that the views are spectacular, the racing somewhat less so, and the form wholly idiosyncratic.
Course specialists are common as the undulations, cambers and road crossings are not to every horse’s taste.
We like the look of the handicap (1640 BST) where Duke of North will be looking to develop a useful course CV. He first sampled the course as an unconsidered 20/1 shot when a good third early last year.
By midsummer he collected a course win off a mark of 65, and his final run of the season was a badly hampered 5th over the course in August.
After a good break he warmed up on the all-weather before a turf run at Windsor a few weeks ago when a decent 4th of 13. He should be fully up to speed now, and returns to a course that suits him well off a mark just 1lb higher than his winning rating of last season.
Favourite and top-weight Sarangoo is a 9 year old mare being asked to defy a hefty rating of 77 on her seasonal debut, whilst the other market leader, Air of York, has one turf win in 29 runs, and that was 2 years ago.
Duke of North can continue the Brighton love affair.
Recommendation: Duke of North, (1640 Brighton), 7/2 generally available
