Whilst we are big fans of the delights of the Northern tracks, it must be said that the drive to Redcar is a lot longer than you may think, and not especially scenic as it passes through the Middlesbrough heavy industries belt.
Indeed, film director Ridley Scott based his nightmarish vision of future industrial dystopia as the setting for the classic Blade Runner on his experiences growing up near the Wilton chemical plant that sits on the route to Redcar.
Journey aside, the track is very fair, and the pies are excellent !!.
A couple of trainers are making the long haul with some unexposed 3-year-olds in the mile handicap (1600 BST).
Whilst the wonderfully named Ronnie The Rooster has earned favouritism off the back of some good runs, those same runs have caught the attention of the handicapper. The less exposed Teodoro, and particularly Archi’s Affair can improve from their seasonal debuts. But it’s a seasonal debutant that carries the biggest element of mystery.
It is a long time since Peter Chapple-Hyam was winning classics with Rodrigo de Triano and Dr Devious, but we think he may have sneaked his runner here, Medalla De Oro, in off a generous looking mark. His last run at Chelmsford over Christmas was full of promise, and a market move for him will speak volumes. A very well bred individual he looks just the type his trainer will want to run up a sequence with.
A good win could stir up some of those old memories for Chapple-Hyam, although as replicant Roy Batty says in Blade Runner …”all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain…”
