The 1000 Guineas card opens with a competitive handicap over 12f. Favourite Big Country is a promising sort who has won his last 2 on the all weather. Oddly, all-weather from tends to work out at Newmarket, nonetheless, he has a 10lb rise to overcome as well as the different conditions.
Mainstream is fancied for the Queen and has the services of Ryan Moore but he will need to be at his best on a horse who has shown some reluctance to win.
We prefer Frontiersman, the mount of William Buick. The last time he saw this course and conditions he was a sumptuously easy winner. He has struggled off an 11lb higher mark in two runs since, but those runs were under different conditions. Re-united with Buick, Newmarket, quick ground and a strong pace, he can live up to the promise of that win last year and defy the odds.
As for the Guineas itself, again it looks hard enough with Aidan O’Brien’s Rhododendron looking a worthy market leader. Daban should give her plenty of work to do, although it was Frankel filly Fair Eva who we fancy most at the odds. Not enough to bet though.
Frontiersman, (1350 Newmarket), 11/2 generally available.
