The Giro D’Italia grand classification kicks off in earnest with Stage 4 as the peloton tackle a testing stage culminating in the ascent of Mount Etna on the picturesque isle of Sicily.
After three stages geared toward the sprinters all of the major teams will be keen to ensure their team leaders do not have any sizable time gaps come the end of the day.
We strongly fancy Nairo Quintana to justify pre-race favoritism and claim the Maglia rose by the end of the tour. However prohibitive odds mean we have to look outside the 10/11 outright and try and see where he will win the race.
There is always a chance the breakaway claim stage victory but given that all the teams retain an interest in the GC in the first week there is a sizable hope the amount of rope given will be finite which could result in the big guns fighting it out at the end of Stage 4.
If this is the scenario then the 11/2 being offered about Quintana will look ludicrous given his ability to explode on big climbs not least in the Giro over the past few years.
The diminutive Colombian could strike an early blow in his attempt to win one of the most sought after Grand Tour crowns and is well worth an interest.
Recommendation: Nairo Quintana, to win stage 4, 11/2 generally available
