PGA Golf: DJ & Rory to Shine at Sawgrass

The Players Championship at Sawgrass, golf’s unofficial fifth major and a tournament that certainly gets the juices flowing.

Positioned just outside Jacksonville in north Florida, 48 out of the world’s top 50 will take on a Pete Dye-designed masterpiece, a classic ‘risk/reward’ course.

Favourite for this tournament is Dustin Johnson, and he warmed up for the event by missing victory by just one shot last weekend, his return to competitive golf after injury. It’s hard to put anyone off backing DJ at the moment, so well is he playing, but his record here is not good. That said, we can get 7/1 on the world’s no. 1, playing well.

The other player that springs to mind is Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irish star tees off this week for the first time competitively as a married man. Although he hasn’t won around this course, Rory has played well, finishing in the top ten on three occasions, and even shot a 29 for a back nine last year.

Another European star who is likely to be buzzing is Sergio Garcia. The Spaniard won the Masters last month, his first major. He has won around this course before, and is likely to be a confident mood, but we’ll avoid as he may still be celebrating!

We think there is value at the head of the market in these big events, and will be backing the two market leaders.

Recommendation: Dustin Johnson at 7/1 & Rory McIlroy at 11/1 to win, generally available
