Cycling Giro: Viva Vivo…

The Giro D’Italia climbs back into the high mountains today.  The bookies expect Spaniard Mikel Landa to triumph, as he is quoted at just 7/4 for the stage.

The theory here is that he is so far back in the overall standings that he will be allowed to go off in a breakaway, and that with his eyes on the King of the Mountains prize, and lots of those points on offer over today’s climbs, then Landa is sure to be in the break.  He would then be in prime position to win the final climb and get the stage he deserves after two placings in the last week.

That does look like a likely story.  The big question is how the race-leaders will play their cards.  This is a stage that should suit race favourite Nairo Quintana like a glove, and it would be no surprise if his Movistar team set an aggressive pace to expose current leader Tom Dumoulin.

If Movistar do go on the attack, it does open up the prospect of the race coming back together before the final summit.

Should Landa get reeled back in, then Quintana has an obvious shout, but we also like the chances of diminutive Italian climber Domenico Pozzovivo.   Dom was placed in the big mid-week stage, a few seconds behind Nibali, Landa and Quintana, and clearly is capable of mixing it with the big boys.

He looks overpriced as an each way dabble.

Recommendation:  Domenico Pozzovivo, Stage 18 Giro D’Italia, 33/1 Bet365, Skybet
