Thursday Races: Get on a Shady deal..

Two fine race meetings adorn a busy Thursday.  Sandown hosts the high quality evening meeting featuring two Group races and two listed races.  Top notch fare, but betting value looks a little thin on the ground.

Goodwood stages a fine afternoon card with a good listed race.  Our attention is however grabbed by two of the handicaps at the Sussex venue.

The 7f handicap (1435 BST) looks like a competitive 10 runner affair, but we are very keen on the mount of champion Silvestre de Souza, the Ian Williams trained Shady McCoy.

Shady really caught the eye when finishing rapidly in a strong Ascot race last time, which was all the more impressive for having run too freely early on and meeting trouble in running.  He is twice a winner at this idiosyncratic venue, and looks set to land significant support in this race.

The 9f race later at 1545 features a few very promising sorts.  Eldritch did this blog a favour when winning last time at Doncaster.  We thought he had plenty in hand that day and a 9lb higher mark is manageable.  He has two big problems to overcome.  The course here may be demanding on a horse who showed inexperience last time.  The bigger problem though may be equine.

Secret Advisor was 2nd last time to another favourite of ours in Crowned Eagle.  Now that winner was absolutely thrown in that day, even so, Secret Advisor had desperate luck in running, finding himself well back in last place after a mid-race melee, before staying on past the whole filed, albeit unable to claw back the winner.

He is due to go up 7lbs for that run from tomorrow, and trainer Charlie Appleby has clearly seen fit to bounce him back out quickly enough to take advantage of that lower rating.  This horse looks well balanced and talented and will hopefully handle the challenge of Goodwood.

Recommendations:

Shady McCoy (1435 Goodwood),  4/1 generally available

Secret Advisor (1545 Goodwood),   2/1 generally available

Shady McCoy & Secret Advisor, win double, 14/1 at generally available odds
