European Golf: Take Wood off the tee…

The European Tour moves from the high profile PGA at Wentworth to a somewhat more low-key field for the Nordea Masters at the Barseback club near Malmo.

This is the home course of Open Champion Henrick Stenson and he starts a prohibitive 5/1 favourite. After some shaky efforts his game has started to dial in and he looked close to his best last week. Course knowledge and world ranking suggest he will be hard to beat, but at those odds he’s hard to back too.

Alex Noren disappeared from our Christmas card list last week when a last round 62 saw him win the Wentworth title over our pick Francesco Molinari. He looks short enough to follow up even though he has won this tournament twice before.

We are cautious about opposing Stenson, and so will limit ourselves this week to one selection.

Chris Wood was in good form in the Middle East before some respectable efforts in the US. He tied fourth in China when reverting to European Tour company and can be forgiven a midfield finish last week when having to deal with the hullabaloo of being defending champion.

With the Swedes taking the limelight, Wood can once again show that he is growing into one of the Tour’s leading forces. Any wind should help his game, and he offers decent each way value.

Recommendation: Chris Wood, 33/1, each way, Coral (1/5th odds first 7)
