We have had a few punts at Goodwood of late, and we are due a change of luck. To be fair, luck in running is always an issue at this track, but we have one more chance today to set the record straight until Goodwood waits for the “Glorious” meeting at the end of July.
The last race of the day (1720 BST) sees the promising Dark Destroyer try to pick up the winning thread after being a well held 8th of 15 last time at Newbury. Prior to that he had won twice on the all-weather.
It may not have been turf that was the problem at Newbury, it may have been more that he simply stumbled into a very high quality race, the form of which is already proving to be golden. He has been dropped 4lbs, and this is a significantly poorer looking race. He can deliver.
The preceding race (1645) is over the same 7 furlongs and may finally offer locally trained The Warrior a chance to atone for two unfortunate defeats at the track this Spring.
He was a strong finishing 3rd after trouble in running here in early May, finishing in front of one of today’s favourites Medburn Dream. He finished fast again when 2nd here a couple of weeks ago. That race was arguably stronger than this event.
He has to beat a pair of favourites, one of whom he has already beaten, and the other who has stamina to prove. Veteran jockey and course specialist Jim Crowley does the steering and this races looks set up for him to earn a long overdue course success.
The Warrior, (1645 Goodwood), 1pt win, 9/2 Ladbrokes.
Dark Destroyer, (1520 Goodwood), 1pt win, 5/2 generally available
The Warrior & Dark Destroyer, 1pt win double, approx. 16/1.
