Wednesday Races: Prince to be king

We head to the Far East for today’s bet – well about as far east as racing gets on these islands.  Great Yarmouth may not exactly be Happy Valley or Sha Tin, but it is a common stop for Newmarket trainers and often hosts a better quality of horse than you may think.

The 10f handicap (1510 BST) certainly offers two likely contenders for horses capable of plying their trade in deeper waters.

Luca Cumani sends the well bred filly Beyond Recall for her handicap debut.  A mark of 73 is likely to be generous in time, but she may just have bumped into one too good today.

That would be the Roger Varian trained Daira Prince.  This colt was a good second at Windsor on seasonal debut.  The step up in trip should suit and whilst top weight here, that’s still only a mark of 77.  He will be very hard to beat.

In the closing handicap, course specialist Rustique looks well placed to repeat his win in this race last year.  He is a few pounds higher today, but his two runs on this course this season have both been decent.

The opposition is short on quality and number, and a front running success looks on the cards – tactics which often prosper on straight course here.

They are both short enough individually, so we will settle for just a double.

Recommendation:  Daira Prince (1510 Yarmouth) & Rustique (1710 Yarmouth), 1pt win double, approx 10/1.
