.A good looking card at York today offers up a couple of very interesting bets.
The Feathered Nest (1605 BST) was a deeply unlucky loser for us when we tipped her last time at Ripon. She was carried right across the width of the course by another runner that day, and yet still went down by just a half length against those that kept the straight line.
She gets the chance to exert revenge on the winner that day, Southern Belle. The other market leaders include Queen in Waiting who is yet to win on turf, and Saintly who has yet to run on anything other than soft ground – it is good to firm today.
Top northern jockey Paul Hanaghan gets the leg up, and trainer Richard Fahey has a superb record at the course. Everything points to The Feathered Nest, and the odds currently on offer demand we step in with a 2pt bet.
The 7f handicap earlier on the card (1530), looks competitive. 19 runners are headed in the market by the light raced Sun Lover, He is hard to assess, whilst fellow favourite Gothic Empire has promised more than he has delivered to date.
At the odds, it must be worth looking at veteran, and crowd-favourite, Bertiewhittle. He seems to have been around since Red Rum, but whilst this 9 year old has only won 2 races in 6 years, they happen to have been the two occasions he has met a field of this size over this course and distance.
His runs this season suggest the old ability is there, and he will never have conditions better suited than today. Worth a punt.
The Feathered Nest, (1605 York), 2pts win, 9/2 Betfred/Totesport
Bertiewhittle, (1530 York), 0.5pts each way, 16/1, Bet365, Coral, BetVictor
