Sunday Races: No sweaty Betty

Well it’s back to more mundane fare after the finery of Royal Ascot. On an ordinary Sunday, it’s the card at Gowran Park that holds most appeal.

A few weeks ago we were ready to back handicap debutant Betty Loch. She was withdrawn that day, and it has been a good wait for her to reappear. The 7f handicap today (1435 BST) gives us just such a chance.

Her maiden form is working out really well and she looks generously weighted for this first handicap run. The bookies are not known for charity, and they certainly aren’t giving much away, but she should still run out an easy winner.

An hour later (1535), a modest looking bunch go to post over the mile. Whilst some of these have clearly been hiding talents from the handicapper, none look ready to shock the world here, and that should give the more exposed Queluz a decent chance. He had looked to become an expert in coming second and third until finally registering a win at Cork last Sunday.

That win should give the horse some confidence as well as revealing the optimal tactical approach for jockey Gary Halpin. He can follow up.

The double should make for some Sunday afternoon fun.

Recommendation:  Betty Loch (1435 Gowran) & Queluz (1535 Gowran), 1pt win double, approx. 14/1.
