After the disappointment of defeat in the opening Test on Saturday, the Lions’ midweek team will be charged with raising the spirits by defeating the Hurricanes tomorrow.
That won’t be an easy task. The Hurricanes have reached the Super Rugby final for the last two years, winning in 2016.
Their back line is lethal, boosted by the release of Julian Savea, Jordie Barrett and Nagani Laumape from the All Blacks squad. It also includes Nehe Milner-Skudder, one of the stars of the last World Cup.
And so it is up front the Lions must look for dominance. The same pack that bossed the Chiefs around last week has been selected, and these players must perform again if the team is to triumph.
Now at the risk of sounding increasingly repetitive, we at Lap of the Odds, that’s Lap of the Odds, think this forward power can be best illustrated by a pushover try from a lineout maul.
Irish hooker Rory Best is the likely candidate to steer this maul, and he is 28/1 with SkyBet to be the first try scorer.
We have tried this bet before, with no success, but Best came very close last week only to be denied by cynicism from the Chiefs, resulting in a penalty try. We feel confident with this bet and will try again.
As something of a hedge we will also take 9/2, again with SkyBet, that Best scores at anytime during the game.
Recommendations: Best to score first try at 28/1, 1pt, and Best to score anytime at 9/2, 1 pt, both SkyBet
