Friday Races: Take A Bow…

Well, we will bid the kind of fond farewell to June that we normally reserve for a bout of food poisoning.  It hasn’t been a pleasant horse-racing experience – but there is always another day.  That day is Friday, and brings with it the 2nd of the 3-day Newcastle meeting that is the highlight of that track’s year.

The feature race tonight is the historic 5f dash for the Gosforth Cup (1900 BST).  This was won last year by Orion’s Bow in the midst of a hot streak of form.  He returns under top weight and somewhat higher in the ratings than last year.

His form this season is less impressive, but there was a distinct sign of better when finishing in mid division at Musselburgh last time when denied a clear run for much of the race.  He is a warm enough favourite, but with the stable in good form, if he can reignite that midsummer form from last year, then this is there for the taking.  Stablemate Rasheeq probably offers the sternest challenge.

The closing race of the meeting (2110) gives us a chance to profit from a horse switching yards.  The stable of Mike Appleby is particularly adept at improving others’ cast-offs.  He picked up winning all-weather sprinter Interlink during the Winter.  His first stable run was over an unsuitably long mile on turf, but with that sharpener under the belt, this return to an artificial surface and shorter trip should see huge improvement.  Jockey Josephine Gordon does the steering.

Recommendations:

Orion’s Bow, (1900 Newcastle). 1pt win, 10/3 Paddy Power.

Interlink (2110 Newcastle), 1pt win, 6/1 widely available

Orion’s Bow & Interlink, 1pt win double, approx 30/1.
