Thursday’s cards stretch across a number of high profile tracks from Newbury to Haydock and on to Epsom. There are a lot of unexposed and potentially improving runners, but with many of them stacked against each other the cards look pretty tricky.
We will rely on some more exposed form in the shape of Epsom’s 6f sprint handicap (1915 BST), packed full of enough veteran’s that it ought to be sponsored by the Over-50s Plan.
Major Pusey is in form and looks likely to go off favourite. He wouldn’t want the ground too fast and is likely to try and pull off all-the-way front-running tactics. Even though this is a small field, he could find it hard to pull that off with fellow front-runner Ashpan Sam potentially creating a tactical issue.
We prefer the claims of Highland Acclaim, for whom sitting just off a strong pace should be ideal. This horse showed a return to form last time when running well at Thirsk, and although back up to a mark of 85, that is still 2lbs below the mark he won off last Summer in his only previous run at this track.
His stable remains in fine form, and his young jockey is excellent value for his claim.
Job done, where do I get my free Parker Pen?
Recommendation: Highland Acclaim (1915 Epsom), 1pt win, 7/2 generally available
