It’s the John Deere Classic this week on the PGA Tour, with the TPC Deere Run hosting the event.
Traditionally held the week before the Open Championship, this tournament has had difficulties in attracting the elite American golfers as they prefer to acclimatise for the special peculiarities of links golf.
This week, the betting market is headed by Daniel Berger. The 23-year old has already won on Tour this year, defending the St. Jude Classic in June before losing the Travelers Championship in a playoff two weeks ago. He is clearly playing well, and has a favourite’s chance.
However, on the grounds that there is a benefit to previous course knowledge–as shown by recent multiple wins by Jordan Speech and Steve Stricker–we at Lap of the Odds are going to side with the 2014 champion Brian Harman. Harman is himself already a winner on Tour this season and finished a fine tied-2nd at the US Open recently.
Our second selection is a little more out of left field. Smylie Kaufman has had a mixed season, with a few missed cuts along the way. However, when he has played well he has been in contention, including finishing tied 5th at the Wells Fargo and tied 12th at the Players. We’ll take a punt on him in this reduced field.
Harman, 1pt win at 22/1, Corals
Kaufman, 0.5pts each way at 125/1, Paddy Power (1/5 the odds for top 7)
