Newmarket Races: Get off to a Flyer…

The prestigious July meeting kicks off at Newmarket this afternoon amidst a sea of blazers and panama hats.

A cracking card features numerous quality contests, but the Lap Of The Odds eyes are drawn, as always, to the massive field of sprint handicappers over the 6f course (1500 BST).

Cartographer is a worthy favourite having trotted up here last time.  That easy win has seen a 9lb rise, and this will be a stiffer test than that 6 runner affair.  Add in the likelihood of being taken on for the lead and this one looks short enough.

Both Ekhtiyaar and Hyde Park look capable of running better races than last time, but if there is one horse in here likely to put a bad run behind him it has to be Danielsflyer.

Namesaking aside, this horse has two 2nds and two wins in 6 runs.  The other two efforts are a 14th and 12th, they were both at York and it may be worth risking that the northern track simply doesn’t suit (it is a Marmite location).

On his easy Newmarket win in May, he would have a decent chance here, but he looks to have been priced on his dismal York efforts.  That may be a mistake.

Recommendation:  Danielsflyer, 0.5pts each way, 22/1 Skybet (1/5th odds first 6 places)
