Sunday Races: Grand day out at Curragh

Well Saturday did not go to plan.  A series of well fancied handicappers all failed to deliver for the blog, whilst the well written up, but ultimately not tipped, Harry Angel, gave us the full Bullseye “lets take a look at what you could have won” when dancing home in the July Cup as we had thought he might.

Looking for a recovery on Sunday in the UK is a waste of space, as once again racing’s administrators treat those racing fans with the day off work to an array of terrible Summer jumping.

Thankfully the Irish have a far more sensible view of how to use a Sunday, and the Curragh stages a handy looking card for the handful of fans allowed past the ongoing building works.

It’s decent quality bit it remains tricky.  Perhaps the most interesting race is the 2m handicap (1645 BST), which sees Jumps legend Willie Mullins continue his efforts to purloin most of the staying flat handicap programme.

His Sure Reef under Ryan Moore is a short favourite.  It’s a few years since he ran on the flat.  he is a horse we have followed closely over hurdles, but ultimately he has been a little disappointing, and although not lumbered with much weight here, he still carries a big health warning.

The same could be said of stablemate and second favourite Digeanta, the health warning here being less to do with inconsistency and more to do with a long absence from the track.

If Willie’s pair do get beaten, Zeftan has great course form, but at shorter trips, and Micras may be more of a danger.  He was a good runner up to Willie’s mare Whiteout here 2 runs ago, which entitles him to go close.

Just behind him that day was Grand Canyon, and with a small turn in the weights it could be time for this lightly weighted 5yo to have his day.

I once took my wife to Vegas for a week (merely coincidence that there’s gambling there, honestly) with the highlight being a trip to the Grand Canyon.  It was shut.  US Government Budget impasse caused it to be shut for the first time in history.  It reopened the day we flew home.  I think Grand Canyon owes me a chance of fortune….

Recommendation:  Grand Canyon, (1645 Curragh), 1pt win, 12/1 Bet365
