Only Pontefract holding up the UK flat racing programme today. But that’s ok, as it serves up a terrific 6f handicap (1600 BST).
Likely favourite is mum-to-be Avon Breeze. She has won twice here recently and returns with the clock ticking on imminent motherhood. Mares often improve when in foal, and she must be respected, although the handicapper is not making things easy.
Also, many dangers abound here. Regular course winner Gin In The Inn can go close if it’s not too wet, whilst first time blinkers on Giant Spark is always an intriguing angle.
We have backed Russian Realm before and he may benefit from a better judged ride in the hands of Graham Lee than was the case last time.
Bossipop has seen plenty of support from a stable that knows how to land a gamble, whilst both Magical Effect and Art Obsession are in cracking form.
With such strength in depth in the race it is a somewhat contrarian view to put up an outsider to beat the lot, but let’s go for it.
Johnny Cavagin has been around the block a few times, including being around the Pontefract block 6 times, winning 3. He has looked in good form this year without winning, including some unkind draws and tricky luck in running.
He has an excellent draw today, loves this stiff 6f and will appreciate any softness in the ground. He is just the type to turn up in a race like this, and the quality of the opposition gives us access to a great price.
Recommendation: Johnny Cavagin, (1600’Pontefract). 1pt each way, 14/1 generally available.
