With all due respect to a decent Saturday card at Galway, it will be all about Goodwood today and the iconic Stewards Cup.
The historic 6f cavalry charge is a handicap highlight of the summer flat campaign and has been won by top sprinters like Lochsong and Coastal Bluff.
Some top in-form sprinters line up. Projection, Danzeno and Polybius all bring top class handicap form from Royal Ascot. On the softer ground, Projection may be the best of the trio. Sir Dancelot is an interesting contender stepped back in trip – he will need luck coming from off the pace.
We prefer the classy Growl. He probably should have won this last year when flying home after an unlucky run. He is now 10lbs higher, but he has earned it with quality runs in Group company. This season has been a bit of a write off, but he showed what he can do when 6th in the top class July Cup last time, less than a length behind Caravaggio. Back at a course he likes, back in form, dropped in class, on soft ground he enjoys, and with a good 7lb claiming jockey, it all adds up. Add in a low draw and access to the fresh strip of ground on the far rail (which sunk our stands side drawn star bet on Friday) and he’s worth a strong bet.
Earlier, the consolation race for those not making the cut for the Stewards Cup is shorter on both numbers and quality.
Scorching Heat and The Wagon Wheel are both in flying form and deserve their place at the top of the market. Pettochside loves this course and should enjoy this more than when a fast finishing 6th here over 5f earlier in the week.
We’re siding with northern challenger Rasheeq. He has been consistent all season but is particularly effective in soft ground. He still looked in great shape when unlucky stumbling out of the stalls at York last Saturday. Form at York often correlates to Goodwood at sprint trips and Rasheeq can land this prize at a nice price.
Its the height of optimism to double the two, but what’s betting if not the epitome of optimism.
Rasheeq, (1350 Goodwood), 0.5pts each way, 16/1 generally available
Growl, (1535 Goodwood), 3pts win, 10/1 Coral
Rasheeq & Growl, 0.5pt each way double
