Saturday Races: Growl can highlight yankee…

A busy day with racing across a number of our favourite tracks, and a busy day’s betting lies ahead like an all you can eat Indian buffet…so tasty you have to dive in, but probably wonder later what were you thinking !!

The headline event is the historic Great St Wilfrid handicap at Ripon (1550 BST).  Do we like a 20 runner sprint handicap..do we like an onion bhaji !!  Topweight and favourite is Growl who we confidently picked for the Stewards Cup at Goodwood.  He looked likely to win that day and probably should have.  This is a weaker affair, and whilst the odds look tight, the race here will split into two groups, and from the favoured stand side, he may only have 10 or so to beat.

Earlier (1515) is the consolation race for those not making the main event (the Lesser St Wilfrid?).  This is a more open affair, but course winner Bossipop is still in the prime of form, and looks likely to go really close having run well here last time.

Over at Newbury, the 7f handicap (1500) is longer on numbers than on quantity.  Trainer Roger Varian’s 4yo Sun Lover is lightly raced, and his two seconds at York and Doncaster this season haven’t been too badly treated by the handicapper.  This race should give him the platform he needs to register a well earned success.

Good old Doncaster gives us another sprint handicap fix courtesy of the 5f dash (1540).   Again this looks competitive, but Soie D’Leau has great course form and comes here off the back of a good series of recent runs.  He can again show his love for Donny and is well worth support.

The later 7f handicap (1610) features a head to head between two favourites of ours in Johnny Barnes and Masham Star.  We might have to let that play out without support, particularly with old favourite Bertiewhittle looking likely to be well suited to the race as well.

Recommendations:

Bossipop, (1445 Ripon), 1pt win, 9/1 William Hill

Sun Lover (1500 Newbury), 1pt win, 9/2 generally available

Growl (1515 Ripon), 1pt win, 5/1 generally available

Soie D’Leau (1540 Doncaster). 1pt win, 5/1 generally available

Sun Lover/Bossipop/Soie D’Leau/Growl:  4 x 0.5pts win trebles, 0.5pt each way accumulator
