Well yesterday was another day of frustration – not so much in the horses we picked who simply underperformed, but the one we wrote up but didn’t pick. We love old Bertiewhittle but felt we couldn’t be sure he’d beat the in form Johnny Barnes so left the race alone….naturally Johnny Barnes was a late non-runner and Bertiewhittle got up to win at 12/1. Well done anyone who read between the lines…
Today’s action at the Curragh offers a chance to resolve some Galway frustration. We were keen on Zippy there for a mile handicap, and although galloping in a clear lead, she was overhauled in the last 100yds to finish 3rd.
She steps down to 6f today, but showed in the two wins that preceded Galway that she doesn’t need to lead. Heavy forecast rain in Ireland this afternoon may well have softened the ground which will help a filly whose best efforts in her UK career were on the soft. A nice high draw is the icing on the cake.
That forecast rain will be pesky for those of us at the All Ireland semi at Croke Park this afternoon (up Mayo..), but will also hinder favourite Mainicin (1700) in the 12f handicap.
Joseph O’Brien’s in form filly Detailed had no problems with soft ground when staying on for a career best 2nd of 17 at Galway despite the unusual impediment of being hampered by a loose horse. Seamie Heffernan keeps the ride and can go one better today.
