European Golf: Danish Dunne Deal…

The European Tour splutters on away from the bright lights and lavish purses of the FedEx playoffs and head off to Himmerland for the Made in Denmark championship.

Last year, Belgian bomber Thomas Pieters stormed this event on the way to securing a Ryder Cup selection.  He is far and away the best player in the field, but at single figure odds and with the distractions of defending he can be forgiven if he lacks last year’s focus.

Dane’s Soren Kjeldsen and Thorbjorn Olesen will have plenty of home support but look short prices, as does an out-of-sorts Martin Kaymer.

We think this is booked as a debut win for budding Irish star Paul Dunne.  He made his breakthrough when leading the Open into round 4 as an amateur.  Well versed in the likely windy conditions, and suited to a course like this that favours accuracy over length, he has continued to play well since a playoff defeat in Morocco earlier in the year.

He looks composed, and deserves a break having called a penalty on himself that resulted in an extra holes defeat in the matchplay last week.  He looks to have a fine chance.

Bradley Dredge would be interesting with tournament form of 2-6-2, but he has had some terrible last rounds when in contention this year.  Marcel Siem played beautifully last week in defeat and can be expected to play well again if those six rounds haven’t taken their toll.

Dunne has a reasonably high profile and is a clear Tour winner in waiting, but it is worth noting he has a world ranking of 179.  A much less well-known youngster, 22 year old Aaron Rai of England has a world ranking of 125.  He tees it up here in just a 5th European Tour event having placed 45-7-34-22 in previous outings.  His world ranking comes via a dominant presence on the Challenge Tour where he has two wins and numerous top 10s this season.

It’s hard to be overly bullish about such an unexposed talent, but he must have tremendous confidence from his Challenge Tour performances and he could be worth risking.

Paul Dunne, 1pt each way, 28/1 BetVictor 1/4 odds top 5.

Aaron Rai, 0.5pts each way, 50/1, Stan James, 1/4 odds top 5.
