After the Vuelta Espana rest day, the riders shape up for the single individual time trial of the Tour.
This should be booked for red jersey wearer and likely Vuelta winner, Chris Froome. He needs to further buffer his comfortable lead as he knows the challenge that awaits on the notorious Angliru climb at the end of the week. That is a savage every-man-for-himself scenario where he won’t be able to lean on his team for help, so the more time gained here the better.
He is the best time trialist here, but odds of 4-6 are no giveaway.
Yves Lampaert and Wilco Kelderman are both decent performers in this field, but pretty much exposed as being no match for Froome.
We would be tempted to be “no-bet” here, but for an outstanding price at Skybet for Froome’s young team-mate and Italian prodigy, Gianni Moscon.
He has shown superb form in a team role through this race, often setting a savage pace at the front of the pack. Those skills match well with a time trial, and although still a youngster, he is the reigning Italian time trial champion.
On that basis, the generally 25/1 to 33/1 makes sense, but 100/1 with Skybet is too big. Unfortunately no-one is offering each way, but he is still worth the risk.
Recommendation: To win stage 16: Gianni Moscon, 1pt win, 100/1 Skybet
