Monday Races: Tar can star…

Brighton, Windsor and Ripon on the menu today, not exactly cordon bleu, more greasy spoon…

Our first instincts today took us to Evanescent (1700 Brighton), as a horse who has won his only previous course attempt, returned from a break with a good run last time and is weighted to go well.

However, a huge gamble on Mansfield in the same race is enough to deter us.  We don’t always get scared by market moves, but this ex-Godolphin horse has tumbled down the ratings, starting at huge SPs and doing nothing.  Trainer Michael Wigham is definitely a gambling yard, and with the money coming for this horse for the first time, it is highly suggestive of a big run. We are torn between the two so will watch and learn.

Instead, it’s time for old favourite Tarboosh in the feature 5f handicap at Ripon (1540 BST). This horse was transformed by a mid-season operation, winning 3 of 5 since.

He scraped home last time but is only 3lb higher here.  His wins started with an impressive success at this track and he is a sprinter with the rare tools of a high cruising speed and a finishing kick.

Those assets can be hard to handicap and Tarboosh could have a few big surprise wins before the season is out.

Hopefully there will be plenty of pace in the race, and that can set up Tarboosh for yet another victory.

Recommendation:  Tarboosh, (1540 Ripon), 1pt win, 13/2 generally available.
