Friday Races: Plan 6 from Outer Space

In 1959, notorious B movie film director Ed Wood, completed the legendary flick Plan 9 from Outer Space.  Often dubbed the worst movie of all time, it was hindered by the death, 3 years prior to filming, of headline star Bela Lugosi (they crow-barred in some old cutting room floor footage from previous movies).

At the risk of the worst tip of all time, we are hopeful of a much better reception for the Jamie Osborne trained Outer Space (1730 BST), who reverts from a career at 7 furlongs to try the 6 furlong trip at Ascot.

This horse is arguably exposed as a much raced 6yo, but we saw something in his last course effort when horribly hampered making a daring run up the rails and finishing 11th of 14.  He travelled very well that day and just hinted that there could have been much more to give.

We have resisted subsequent poorer runs at Chelmsford and Yarmouth, waiting for a return to this course, and the switch to 6 furlongs is certainly an interesting move having again been hampered in his only try at the trip on turf in recent years at an unsuitable Newmarket earlier in the summer.

Jockey Dougie Costello is very much alive, and he will want to atone for the tactical error of his last trip here.  Look for him to be held up and a little luck in running should see a hugely improved results.  Worth a full point each way.

Costello could be on the crest of a wave after his ride on Big Baz in the preceding race (1700).  This horse is dropping back in the weights having been too high after a couple of listed runs last year.

His 6th at York last time was a much improved effort and this course could bring out the best in him.  We expect plenty of market support.

Opposition includes two old favourites of ours in Banksea and Sacred Act.  Banksea may be warming up for the Cambridgeshire here, and Sacred Act may be the bigger danger after switching to the Bell yard.  He is certainly one to keep an eye on, but we think it could be Baz’s day today.

Recommendations:

Big Baz, (1700 Ascot), 1pt win, 10/1 Bet365, Bet Victor

Outer Space, (1730 Ascot), 1pt each way, 14/1 Ladbrokes, Coral

Big Baz & Outer Space, 0.5 pts each way double, approx 140/1 (Bet365)
