After winning last season’s Europa League, Manchester United return to the Champions League tonight for the first time since 2015.
For their first game the Red Devils have a home clash with Basel. Although United will start as heavy favourites, this will be the fifth game between the two sides in the Champions League and the record is balanced, with one win each and two draws. In fact Basel are unbeaten at Old Trafford, drawing their previous two clashes.
That said, Basel, making their eighth Champions League appearance, haven’t recorded a win in their last 10 games in the competition, and haven’t scored more than once in any of these matches.
United have started the season in a very powerful vein, scoring 12 goals in their four league fixtures, and we at Lap of the Odds expect this to continue tonight.
We expect Jose Mourinho’s side to be too strong for Basel, and look for French international Paul Pogba to make runs from his midfield position into the opposing penalty area almost at will. SkyBet offers 11/1 that he scores with a header and we will get involved with that.
Recommendation: Pogba to score a header at 11/1, 1 pt, SkyBet
