Chelsea return to the Champions League tonight, after missing out last season, with a home clash with Azerbaijani side Karabakh.
This game represents Karabakh’s debut in the Champions League, and the gulf of experience between the two sides is marked. This is Chelsea’s 15th campaign in this competition, the third most for an English club, and they are the last English club to win this in 2012.
Chelsea have only lost one of their past 13 Champions League group games, away in Porto in 2015, and have scored in each of their last 24 group games at home.
This all points to a comfortable home win tonight, something that the bookies have fully priced in. On the grounds that betting on a 1/9 shot is best left to those with money to burn, we’ll look elsewhere.
Chelsea have a lot of talented ball players, and the thought of the likes of Pedro, Willian and probably Hazard running at a beleaguered defence brings multiple shouts for a penalty to mind.
SkyBet offers 7/2 that Chelsea will be awarded a penalty, but we’ll take the 5/1 that they score one and we’ll do so confidently.
Recommendation: Chelsea to score a penalty at 5/1, 2 pt, SkyBet
