Doncaster’s St Leger meeting moves into the second day of action and the challenge for punters is soft ground subject to drying winds and possible showers. In all, a bit of a nightmare.
We will continue to tread carefully keeping in mind better chances later in the week, but we can’t let Richard Fahey’s promising 2yo Great Prospector pass by unbacked in the valuable sales race (1535 BST).
Fahey often gets one prepared for these valuable 2yo races and this horse came very close to winning a similar race at York last time. He has a neck to find on the Richard Hannon trained Tangled who reopposes here and clearly represents the main danger.
The extra distance here looks likely to play to Fahey’s runner’s advantage, and in a race longer on numbers than quality, he looks a good value market leader.
We were very sweet on Outer Space before he was withdrawn from a race at Ascot last Friday as the ground softened. He reappears at Epsom today on preferred good surface (1400).
He remains a horse waiting to spring a surprise and very well handicapped. His one run at Epsom was inconclusive, and whilst we would have preferred Ascot as a venue, the opposition here is weaker than last week, and yet the odds remain enticingly long. He needs to be backed.
Outer Space (1400 Epsom), 0.5pts each way, 16/1 generally available
Great Prospector (1535 Doncaster), 1pt win, 4/1 generally available
Outer Space & Great Prospector, 0.5 pts each way double, approx. 84/1
