Cricket: Go Johnny go…

England take on the West Indies later today in the first of five one-day internationals, with Old Trafford the venue.

The Windies recall batsmen Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels to the squad beaten comprehensively by England in the Caribbean in March, but the home team are also strengthened with the recall of Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali to the side that lost the T20 over the weekend.

We at Lap of the Odds HQ think England will again be too strong over the course of the series, but what interests us is the selection of Johnny Bairstow to open the innings today. If England do start winning easily there will be the temptation to rest players, but Bairstow is likely to be given every opportunity to cement his position, i.e. he probably plays all the games. And given he will have the maximum time to bat he could easily top the series runs by the end.

Paddy Power offers 9/2 that he does so, and we will be backing that.

Recommendation: Bairstow to score most runs for England in series at 9/2, 1 pt, Paddy Power
