League Cup: Man United looks best pick

The English League Cup starts in earnest tonight, with the highlight being Liverpool’s visit to Leicester.

Looking at the competition as a whole, while it’s true Swansea and Birmingham have won the cup during the last 10 years the big guns have tended to dominate. The TV revenue has meant large squads for the Premiership giants, with their second teams still better than most.

That said, there remain doubts about how seriously Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and Antonio Conte at Chelsea take the competition. Liverpool have a very tricky starting fixture and Tottenham maybe the exception with a smallish squad. That boils it down to Arsenal and Manchester United, and we prefer the latter given Jose Mourinho’s unquenchable desire for trophies.

Returning to tonight’s main game, both sides are likely to make changes from the weekend. But whatever side Liverpool put out seems to have difficulty coping with the crossed ball. We look for Leicester centre half Harry Maguire (let’s hope he plays) to score at anytime. Paddy Power offers 16/1, quite a jump from the 8/1 generally available elsewhere.

Recommendations:

Manchester United to win League Cup at 6/1, 1 pt, widely available

Harry Maguire to score at anytime at 16/1, 1 pt, Paddy Power
