Thursday Races Reboot: Storm has silver lining

Massive frustration as a day of enticing gambles at the start of Ayr’s Western meeting gets called off due to waterlogged conditions.

Rather than sit on our refunds, we will put some to work over at Pontefract, where some generous handicapping allows a blog regular October Storm to slip into one of the Yorkshire track’s regular marathon handicaps (1630 BST).

We felt Mick Channon’s stayer was well handicapped at Glorious Goodwood off a mark of 77 based on an early season course win off 71 and a creditable effort at Royal Ascot.  In fairness he disappointed in that Goodwood marathon slog, and again afterwards on the unsuitable all-weather surface at Kempton.

Today he has 2 miles on softish ground under jockey Graham Lee – the exact conditions of his best form.  He has been generously dropped to a mark of 72 and switches dramatically in class from being the lowest weighted contender against classy opposition to bring top weight against modest opponents.

All this points to a potential return to his best, in which case he has a real winning chance.  Worth a flutter whilst they get the mops out at Ayr….

Recommendation:  October Storm, (1630 Pontefract), 1pt win, 15/2 generally available
